The hidden pandemic of Stockholm syndrome

China

Author: Leonardo Bonil. MIP's International MBA Candidate

Looking inside me, trying to overcome my fear to speak in public in a foreign language, I start to be aware of my fears in general, some not serious like the fear of the speed or heights and horror movies; but there are others more serious, not serious in the sense of been kill or injured, serious in the sense of been against my happiness or achievements, that fear that paralyzes you when you must take a decision, face the unknown and the most terrifying, fear to success.

China

That fear is like an invisible bandit, who tied us in chains, squeezing the neck letting us breathless, his strength is related with our skills or believes, if I’m good dancing, he is not capable to tie me to the chair or the wall, I can liberate myself and dance, but is not necessary be the best dancer in the place, is it just matter to believe our skills are good enough to follow the beat. In the other hand, when we believe we are not good on that or is unknown to us he rules our life, and gain strength over the years.

We feed that bandit, our natural strength and awareness give him power, when we are children there is not awareness, so there is no bandit behind us, during the adolescents the kidnaping begins; the less trained guy of the class is afraid to run besides the fastest one, is not matter of always be the winner, I think everybody knows we can’t win in everything, is just matter of being judged by the others, next time the kidnaper will be able to tie so hard and squeeze so intense the neck that will be like a punishment run again, also could occur in the class room, that fast guy is not good in some course (I’m not saying the people good in sports are dumb in math or science is just one example), once the professor ask him go to the board and make the exercise, occurs the same situation, is not matter of be the most smart person, also everybody knows not all the people are good in all sciences, is the same phenomena been judged.

China

When we are grow up enough to live by ourselves, the Stockholm syndrome start, we fall in love of that bandit, he makes us feel safe in his chains and his conditions are rules for us. Is so big that love, that we create groups to be beside people with the same fear, the same kidnaper, is like a fans club, everybody talk about how good is being there, the other people are wrong we are right, is like fools looking for more fool people to don’t feel yourself so stupid, slow runners meeting slower people to feel itself faster.

In the personal matter that kidnapper also is present, you are not happy with your couple, you spend hours thinking on that, when you meet your friends and drink some liquor, to get drunk the kidnapper, you are able to look for another couple in the place that you are, or you are able to talk to your couple and say your thoughts and why you are not happy, once there is no more effect of the beverage, your fear start to rule your life again; also I saw that in the opposite way, some people know the love or their lives, but the fear to be successful or be judged again wing, squeezing so hard your throat that you are not able to release one simple word.

I think once we are too old or too weak, also that kidnapper is weak, we behave again like kids, looking for our happiness or at least our inner peace, some sad because they spent their lives behind chains and barbed wires, and some other happier because they rule their own lives.

China

I notice this in all countries, places, cultures or whatever that I been before, is part of the human behavior, is pandemic, some people call it in different ways and write books in form of wire cutters or master keys promising warranted freedom, selling millions and gaining millions with no effect, this pandemic of Stockholm syndrome still stand and will be there forever, the fear is part of us, so I think the only way to manage it, to be cured of this syndrome, is understanding the fear is not bad, the really bad is the paralyzing effect of fear in us, let the fear behave like a kidnapper and let him seduce us to have a fearful life.
